Government Grants

There are many television commercials and websites that talk about government grants and how to obtain them.  In these tough economic times average people are looking for funding for such things as starting new businesses, purchasing homes and obtaining higher educations.

The money is available from the federal government of the United States in the form of government grants for all these things and even more. One just has to know where to look and how to apply to get the money.  As a general rule government grants don’t ever have to be repaid.  For example, the federal Pell grant for college.  If you qualify to obtain this college grant as long as you meet the requirements of the Pell grant program you will never be required to pay it back. You must first qualify by meeting certain income requirements.  In other words it depends on how much money you or your family have made in the past.  Then after that as long as your in college and meeting the minimum grade point average for the Pell program you will continue to get money for help in funding your education all the time that you attend.  The federal Pell grant has helped millions of college students obtain their educations.  The Pell grant funding has come under some heavy scrutiny as the current budget slashing has been going on by law makers in Washington D.C.  However as of writing this the Pell grant system has remained funded without many changes.  So, that is good news if your wanting to try and get a Pell grant this year.  Why aren’t a lot more people obtaining government grants?  Well, that is a really good question.  There is only one reason and that is because they are not readily told about the many different programs that are available. If the majority of the population does not know about grant funding then they won’t try and even find out if they qualify for any of the programs.  Federal grants are usually given to big organizations, state or local governments.

These agencies should have plans for creating major projects that benefit the community or a specific sector of the population.   These projects are usually those approved by the government: retraining of displaced workers from overseas or retrenchment; a new business program to improve the livelihood of depressed areas; a road paving project for a certain locality; water conservation programs; or a flood control project for a certain state or county. All applications must be fully supported with valid objectives for approval.

The Federal Register is responsible for announcing the availability of funds for grant projects.   Approved projects are usually listed in the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA). Searching in this list is offered free and these are available through the Internet as well as the public library. When applying for a money grant, an applying agency or individual must need to explain how it shall be used. The application must all be accomplished with detailed contact information.  These applications will be reviewed, judged and awarded. Successful grantees must adhere to the performance standards, reports and regular audits of the government.

For beneficiaries of government grants, the government imposes strict monitoring of the projects.  This is to check if they meet its detailed standards as to the duration, proper implementation, and funding period of the grant. In relation to the grant application, detailed program goals must be developed, approved and imposed. Changes or alternations to the plan have to be approved by the government.  All money grants must be spent; expenditures for the project are strictly accounted for and occasionally audited by the government. Unused funds go directly back to the Treasury.  Project phases must be completed on time, which should prove a demonstrable success.

One must fulfill their obligation to perform the requirements needed for the grant.  As this is solely granted by the government, it is expected that the funds go directly to the approved project. Failure to comply the arrangements will result to penalties and other economic sanctions such as imprisonment or large fines.

Government grants provide their recipients the benefit to enjoy all approved projects.  What is good about grants is the government, which is the grantor, does not expect full repayment of the amount.  It aims to support the organization, state or local government implementing the project to improve people’s way of life as well as the current economy of the country.
